The Oncologists of Zion Hospital have years of expertise in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They carefully explain the diagnosis, stage, treatment options to patients and helps them to manage side effects of cancer. A multi-disciplary approach towards the treatment of cancer has bought several people back to regular lives.

Medical Oncology

Medical Oncologists are specialised in treating cancer using Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, Hormonal Therapy and Targeted Therapy.

1. Chemotherapy (Cytotoxic Therapy)

Chemotherapy uses chemical substances to destroy cancer cells, either by slowing or stopping their growth. It can be used to destroy recurrent cancer cells and also prevent spread of cancer to healthy parts of the body. Chemotherapy can also destroy healthy cells and cause many side effects including loss of hair and nails, nausea and vomiting, and a weakened immune system. But patients usually get better after the end of Chemotherapy.

2. Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy boosts or restores body's immune system to fight against cancer. It is done by using cells from the patient's own body or those made in a laboratory to improve body's natural defences.

3. Targeted Therapy

Targeted Therapy is a drug based therapy that works by targeting specific molecules needed for formation of cancer cells and tumour growth. It helps in stopping cancer cells from spreading to other places. Unlike Chemotherapy, Targeted Therapy does not interfere with normal rapid cell divisions.

4. Hormone Therapy (Endocrine Therapy)

Some cancers are hormone sensitive and uses hormones to grow and develop. Hormone therapy relies on medicines to block or reduce the amount of hormones that fuel the growth and division of cancer cells. It is most commonly used to treat breast and prostrate cancers.

Surgical Oncology

Surgical Oncologists at Zion Hospital are specially trained surgeons who focus on the treatment of cancer using surgical methods. Many cancer patients can be cured with surgery alone. Surgical Oncologists start the treatment with a complete physical examination and complete history of the patient.

What does a Surgical Oncologist Do?

A Surgical Oncologist removes the cancer and a small area of healthy tissue surrounding it, to prevent cancer from recurring in that area. Sometimes it is not possible to remove the entire tumour but instead surgery is done to remove as much of the tumour as possible.
